Mother’s Day Crafts for Kids and 4 Free Printables

Mother's Day Projects for Kids & Free Printables

Since it has basically felt like winter here until a few days ago, it’s really hard to believe that Mother’s Day is just around the corner! But believe it or not, April is winding  down and Mother’s Day will be here before we know it.

I thought it would be fun to come up with some ideas for Mother’s Day that the kiddos could help out with. In our household, my daughters love to draw and color. Whenever we go to a birthday party, they like to make their own card for the birthday girl or boy.

I love receiving hand drawn pictures from my girls! They put their heart into making special pictures for me and you can just see the pride beaming from their little faces when they present me with their masterpiece. I hang a lot of their pictures above my desk and it’s like having a little piece of them with me while I’m working.

Mother’s Day Coloring Card

So what better way to have the kiddos help celebrate mom than to let them color in their own Mother’s Day card? I designed this card to be printed on standard letter size paper. Once printed, simply fold the paper in half to make a card. Kids can color in the design on the front and create their own message and picture on the inside.

There’s a place on the back of the card for kids to write in their name. I always like to record the year as well so that years from now I’ll know when the card was made.

The finished card makes an adorable keepsake. I don’t know about you, but I like to hang onto the cards my girls give me. I’m not sure what I’ll do with them, but I hope some day we can go through them together and remember happy times of celebration. For now, they’re tucked away safely in a box in my closet.

Mother’s Day Hand Print Art

Of all the projects my girls make at school, hand print art is my favorite. I can’t keep everything they make at school (where in the world would you store all of that?!) but I always keep their hand print projects. I love to look back at these and see how small their hands used to be. It really captures a snapshot in time.

For this design, I used lovely watercolor florals from the Fox and Hazel blog. I wanted something feminine and chic that could easily be incorporated into a mom’s home or office decor. The hand prints are really the focal point of this print, but I think the florals really give it a finished look.

To make this project on your own, download the design from my printables library. The file is set up to print on standard letter-sized paper, but I included a guide for where to cut to trim it down to an 8×10 print.

For the hand prints, I find it easiest to cover your child’s hand in a thin layer of washable paint using a paint brush.  I suppose you could just put the paint on a paper plate and let your kiddo dip their hand in it, but then you run the risk of very uneven coverage and likely messy, drippy paint hands. I’ll leave that one up to you!

Finish off the gift by putting the print in a simple frame. You could even have the kids paint the frame to add more personalization. Just make sure to buy an easel frame so mom can prop it up on her desk or dresser!

The picture above has both of my daughter’s hand prints on it, but you could certainly have one child put both of their hand prints on it.

Need a gift for grandma as well? I’ve got you covered! I included a grandma version in the printables library. Go check it out!

Printable Mother’s Day Cupcake Toppers

No celebration is complete without dessert! If the mom in your life is anything like me, a day dedicated to celebrating mom better involve cupcakes! I think it’s so sweet when my husband and girls whip up a yummy dessert for me or pick out something special from the bakery.

Wouldn’t it be fun to top off mom’s special dessert with a DIY cupcake topper? My favorite one of the bunch says “You make this Mom thing look like a piece of cake!” Moms do so much for everyone else in their lives. Take this opportunity to show your love and appreciation with a sweet treat!

To assemble the cupcake toppers, download the design from my printables library. Print the toppers on standard letter-size paper. You can either cut out the circles with scissors, or use a paper punch. I like to use this scallop circle paper punch when I cut out cupcake toppers to give them a festive touch.

Once you have cut out all of your cupcake toppers, simply tape a toothpick to the backside and you are ready to jazz up your cupcakes.

Ta-da! These cupcake toppers are so simple to make, but they really spruce up the cupcakes and show that you’ve put in extra effort to make the occasion special. It’s all in the details!

  1. Really cute ideas here! Hand-prints are darling! I could see this on a shadow-box with the words done in vinyl and attached to the glass and the hand-prints on paper behind and some dried flowers added.

    1. That’s a great idea, Theresa! I’ll have to remember that for Father’s Day 🙂

  2. These are adorable! I espcially love the coloring page. I can’t find it in the library, help!

    1. Thanks, Jeanette! When you open the library, the coloring page is right above the Mother’s Day hand print art. When you click on the image or the file name (Mother’s Day Coloring Card) it will open up a PDF for you to print. Please let me know if you’re still having trouble finding it!
